My palms are sweaty, knees are weak and arms are heavy. Despite popular belief, I’m not at an Eminem concert – just about to attempt the flying trapeze!
Who knew circus skills could be so heart-pumping, nerve-inducing and well… fun? Anyone who’s ever mastered this experience, that’s who! So step right up, step right up and find out why this workshop is some of the best fun you can have on a budget.
The platform might not look high up when you first arrive, but when you start climbing that ladder I challenge you to maintain a normal heart rate. Once at the top, you simply step across to a tiny wooden platform – the only thing between you and what looks like a giant fishing net. In order to get in the perfect pre-trapeze position, the instructor will hold you by the belt as you lean over the edge and reach both hands out to grab the handle. Once you hear the instructor on the ground yell “Hop” it’s all stations go. It’s not as intense as skydiving or as scary as shark diving, but you’re guaranteed to feel a massive adrenaline rush.
When was the last time you did something for the first time? It’s very rare that we get to well and truly live like a kid again, so this is your opportunity to have some good old-fashioned fun. Every time you step off the platform – which is around five times per workshop – the instructors add a level of difficulty to the trapeze routine you’ll be completing. First is the knee hang with a simple drop dismount; then a knee hang with a back flip dismount; a knee hang with a look back and arms outstretched; and then finally two attempts at the mid-air “catch”. This is where one of the instructors jumps on the other swing and (hopefully) catches you. Bit by bit you’ll learn more and by the end you should be nailing that catch.
Kick ‘dinner and a movie’ to the curb! If you really want to get to know your potential new partner, then this is the perfect weekend activity. It will show you what they’re like under pressure, give you plenty to talk about and if they’re afraid of heights, you’ll see if they’re willing to conquer their fears. The latter of which is a great idea if you’re an adrenaline junkie planning a future filled with adventurous activities. And talk about value for money – experiences start at just $66 per person. By the time you buy dinner, a bottle of wine and a movie ticket with snacks, you’re well over that price.
Core, legs, arms – you name it, the flying trapeze works it out. You only need to look at the instructors to understand how good this activity is for fitness (and fun!). Whether you’re climbing the ladder, holding your body weight on the bar or turning upside down and hooking your legs; it's a better workout then you’ll get from a typical gym session. And because it’s a full-body workout, it’s the perfect way to kick off a New Year’s resolution, or a fun activity once you hit your fitness goals.
