This true food tourism experience showcases the importance of sugar in the creation of so many alcohol and food products, More than a just a "tour", this journey celebrates the sugar cane pioneers who brought great prosperity to the region through their back-breaking work and mechanical ingenuity.
Experience the rich heritage of sugar cane in the Mackay region with this unique paddock-to-plate-to-bottle food tourism experience at Sarina Sugar Shed. A multiple award-winning destination, recognised as a prestigious Best of Queensland Experience, you'll embark on a one-hour guided tour behind the scenes of a miniature sugar mill and boutique distillery. With an expert guide leading the way you'll learn about the history of sugar cane farming in the region and see modern methods in action. You'll also have a chance to taste freshly-crushed sugar cane juice and sample the award-winning rum and liqueur products made on-premises (age 18+ only), as well as delicious chutneys, sauces and relishes made with locally sourced produce. Please note - our tour does not include a tour of the Plane Creek Sugar Mill situated next to the Sugar Shed.
You can even treat the kids with non-alcoholic ginger beer, freshly-spun fairy floss and homemade Mooscoop ice cream all available in the retail store. Plus, you can combine this experience with the Sarina Sugar Shed Rum Distillery Experience for a comprehensive look into the full rum distilling process.
Each tour capacity is from one - 20 participants. Four tours are operated each day (subject to operating conditions such as sufficient staffing).
Tours operate in most weather conditions except where there is a safety risk for visitors. Tours may be limited or modified in extreme heat or severe storms. Umbrellas are provided to visitors for general shade and rain protection.
Hats are advised for the outdoor section of the tour. Closed footwear is highly recommended for visitor safety. Footwear must be worn (no bare feet).
